What is IFS-Informed EMDR Intensive?

IFS-Informed EMDR Intensives offer a focused and accelerated approach to trauma therapy, designed for those seeking rapid relief from trauma-related symptoms. Unlike traditional weekly sessions, these intensives involve multiple days of therapy, allowing for deep, concentrated processing and faster healing.

This format is especially beneficial for individuals dealing with complex trauma or those who prefer a more efficient treatment experience. The goal is to help you reprocess traumatic memories, reduce emotional distress, and enhance overall well-being.

Combining the strengths of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with Internal Family Systems (IFS), this integrative approach not only uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories but also addresses different "parts" of the self that may be carrying the effects of trauma. The result is a comprehensive path to healing that promotes both emotional relief and inner harmony.

What Makes IFS-Informed EMDR Intensives Unique

Overall, IFS-Informed EMDR Intensives offer a more nuanced and personalized approach to trauma therapy, addressing the complexities of the inner world in a way that standard EMDR may not fully encompass. IFS-Informed EMDR Intensives differ from standard EMDR intensives in several key ways, incorporating elements of Internal Family Systems (IFS) to deepen the healing process. Here’s how they stand apart:

stress (1).png

Integration of Internal Family Systems (IFS) Principles

IFS-informed EMDR is particularly useful for individuals who experience dissociation, fragmentation, or feeling disconnected from themselves. By working with different parts of the self, this approach can help address dissociative symptoms directly, ensuring a more integrated and comprehensive healing experience.

Enhanced Preparation and Grounding Techniques

Pre-processing often includes IFS-based grounding and resourcing strategies to help clients establish a safe internal environment before diving into memory reprocessing. This approach ensures that different parts of the self are stabilized and ready for deeper work, reducing the risk of re-traumatization.

Emphasis on Self-Leadership and Inner Harmony

IFS-informed EMDR prioritizes reconnecting with your core Self, a calm and centered inner state that can guide the healing process. This helps foster inner harmony and self-leadership, providing a stronger foundation for processing trauma and reducing the risk of being overwhelmed during sessions.

Deeper Emotional Exploration and Healing

While traditional EMDR intensives focus on reducing distress related to specific memories, IFS-informed EMDR goes beyond this to explore the underlying beliefs, emotions, and protective mechanisms associated with different parts. This holistic approach promotes deeper healing by addressing not only the trauma but also the broader impact on the individual’s internal world.

Customized Targeting Based on Parts Work

Instead of merely identifying traumatic memories for processing, IFS-informed EMDR involves assessing which parts may be resistant or protective. The therapist collaborates with these parts to ensure they feel safe and supported, paving the way for smoother processing and better outcomes.

Focus on Self-Compassion and Integration Post-Intensive

After the intensive, IFS-informed EMDR encourages ongoing self-reflection, checking in with various parts, and cultivating self-compassion. This helps ensure that the gains made during the intensive are maintained, and the individual feels more connected and integrated in their daily life.

The Process of IFS-Informed EMDR Intensives

IFS-Informed EMDR Intensives at In Vivo Center offer a focused approach that combines Internal Family Systems (IFS) principles with EMDR techniques to facilitate deep and accelerated healing. This intensive format is ideal for individuals seeking rapid progress in addressing trauma or other emotional challenges. Here’s what you can expect throughout the process:

Intake and Assessment: Memory Targeting and Planning

1.5-Hour Session (Phase 1 of EMDR)

A thorough assessment identifies key factors such as trauma history, emotional triggers, and dissociative patterns that may need attention during the intensive.

You and your therapist will collaborate on a tailored treatment plan that integrates IFS principles and EMDR techniques for a holistic approach to healing.

The plan is designed to address your specific needs, focusing on reconnecting with your inner parts while processing traumatic memories and unblocking stuck emotions.

Intensive Session(s): Blending IFS and EMDR Techniques

One or Multiple Days (Phases 3-7 of EMDR)

EMDR techniques are incorporated to reprocess traumatic memories, using bilateral stimulation to reduce the emotional intensity associated with these experiences. EMDR aids in reintegrating fragmented experiences, helping you feel more present and connected to your surroundings.

Throughout the intensive, your therapist will help you access different "parts" of yourself using IFS, creating a safe space for each part to be acknowledged and understood. IFS-informed techniques support you in connecting with your core Self, fostering inner harmony and reducing symptoms.

Closing the Intensive Session

Your therapist will guide you in grounding techniques and self-regulation skills to manage any emotional activation during the intensive.

Between intensive sessions, you will have time to integrate the work done, with support from your therapist as needed.

Initial Consultation

25 minutes free

Begin with a 25-minute free structured consultation, led by your EMDR therapist, to determine if an IFS-informed EMDR intensive is a suitable approach for you. We will discuss the goals and memories you want to target in treatment.

We recommend familiarizing yourself with our blogs and specialty pages on EMDR and IFS beforehand to make the most of this time. Please come prepared with specific memories or events you want to target—having a clear idea will help us recommend the most appropriate intensive for your needs.

Pre-Processing and Resourcing

1-Hour Session (Phase 2 of EMDR)

This phase focuses on preparing you for the intensive by guiding you through coping techniques, self-regulation skills, and stress management strategies – referred to as resourcing in EMDR - to help you stay centered before, during, between, and after the intensives.

We also identify your “parts” including the wounded parts of yourself along with the protective parts of you.

Post-Processing Assessment

1.5-Hour Session (Phase 8 of EMDR)

The final phase involves reviewing the progress made during the intensive. We'll discuss the positive changes observed, reinforce your new coping strategies, and provide self-care advice to support ongoing healing with your parts.

We will solidify your results by envisioning your future version of yourself as confident, empowered, and thriving
