The Fog of Dissociation

Dissociation can be an overwhelming and confusing experience, often disconnecting us from our own lives and emotions without us even realizing it. Pause for a moment and consider—do any of these statements resonate with you?

You feel disconnected from your surroundings as if you're watching your life from a distance or living in a dream.

Do you ever find yourself "zoning out" or losing chunks of time, unsure of what you were doing or thinking?

Have you ever felt like you’re on autopilot, going through the motions but not fully present in the moment?

Perhaps you feel emotionally numb, unable to access your feelings, or struggling to connect with those around you.

You may have difficulty remembering important details or even whole events from your life as if they were erased from your memory.

Sometimes, it feels like you're living in two worlds—one where you're physically present and another where your mind retreats for safety.

The aftermath of a crisis and the impact of its trauma can weave into every corner of your life, making it difficult to break free from the grasp of the past. These effects hit us deep in the core, and they can make living authentically seem impossible amidst the chaos of each day. If this resonates with you, rest assured that you're not alone in these feelings.

Our Approach

At In Vivo Center, our approach is designed to support your journey toward reclaiming your sense of self and presence in the world. In therapy, we use a combination of therapeutic modalities to help you reconnect with yourself and your surroundings, with a strong emphasis on Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. This is often integrated with other trauma-focused approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Brainspotting, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, along with somatic body-focused therapies. Through these approaches, you can work toward healing dissociation and achieve the following:

  • Rebuild a Sense of Safety: Learn to feel grounded and secure within your body and in the world around you.

  • Reconnect with Your Emotions: Open yourself up to the full range of emotions that dissociation may have distanced you from, allowing for a richer, more authentic experience of life.

  • Cultivate Confidence and Trust: Strengthen trust in yourself and in your relationships with others, enabling more meaningful and supportive connections.

  • Accept and Integrate Past Experiences: Find peace with past trauma and experiences, leading to a deeper sense of spiritual and emotional freedom.

How it Works

IFS provides a powerful pathway to healing dissociation by helping you connect with different "parts" of yourself—parts that may be holding memories and emotions from past trauma. Through this gentle exploration, you’ll learn to understand, accept, and compassionately care for these inner parts, allowing them to release their grip on your present experience. As you work with IFS, you'll reconnect with your core Self, the calm and wise center within you, helping bring harmony and balance to your inner world.

EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues, to help your brain process and heal traumatic experiences. Dissociation can often result from unresolved trauma, and EMDR provides a way for your mind to safely reprocess these painful memories, rewiring thought patterns and reducing the emotional intensity connected to them. EMDR helps you achieve relief and renewal, bringing you back into the present moment.

Brainspotting taps into your brain’s natural ability to heal by focusing on specific points in your visual field. By identifying these "brainspots," which are connected to stored emotional and physical responses to trauma, Brainspotting helps you access and process deep-rooted experiences. This approach can guide you from a state of overwhelm to resilience and inner calm, helping you integrate dissociated parts of your experience.

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) helps bridge the disconnect between body and mind caused by trauma and dissociation. By focusing on the physical sensations tied to trauma, SP allows you to process memories stored in your body. Through mindful awareness, movement, and posture, SP helps release the physical grip that trauma has on your system, fostering emotional healing and restoring a sense of safety and ease in your body.
